Camshaft and Crankshaft
To synchronize the camshaft and crankshaft rotation a timing belt is used. It is also responsible for intake and exhaust strokes of the valves (as it drives the cam) and is the most important maintenance item in your car, however it is neglected in many vehicles. Its neglected on cars with reversed meters for easy selling or when odometers are replaced altogether when they stop functioning. Please note that interference engine designs will have the full head damaged if the belt snaps. Examples are Honda Civics 1997-2000
Honda Civics 2000-2007 D15 D16 Engines
Also newer engines both by Honda and Toyota are coming with timing chains which hardly snap but do require some adjustments or replacements at 200,000KM+ due to fatigued joints causing minor power loss
